You have to find somewhere that looks right, confirm you can legally film there, and work out how a crew and its gear get in. Those answers live in different places — a map, a saved photo, a call to a permit office — so scouting eats days and still leaves surprises for the shoot.

Why the tools you already use fall short
Google Maps shows what exists, not what works
It has every address on earth and almost nothing a shoot needs to know about them: when the light hits the façade, whether you can film inside, where a five-ton truck parks. You find a building, then start calling around to learn if it is usable.
Instagram and moodboards sell the look, not the location
A saved post tells you a place is photogenic. It rarely tells you where it actually is, whether it still looks like that, or that the same frame had forty tourists standing just out of shot. References set a direction; they do not survive contact with a call sheet.
A pin and a screenshot are not a plan
Scouting answers operational questions that pretty references never do, so the real work gets pushed to the morning of the shoot — on the clock, when it is most expensive to get wrong.
